1. FIRST, you should get a blank sheet of notebook paper and label the top of it: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures.
2. Next, copy the tree diagram on this website into your notes. "MATTER" should be at the top of the tree.
3. Read the web page and be sure to define the following terms in your own words in your notes:
Element
Atom
Compound
Mixture
Homogenous mixture
Heterogenous mixture
4. Go back to the diagram you drew at the top of your notes. Using the reading to help you, write 2 examples of each of the words on the diagram next to the boxes. FOR EXAMPLE, next to the box that says "matter," you might write "ice cream, air" next to that box, because those two things are examples of matter.
5. ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF NOTEBOOK PAPER, classify the things on the list below as either: elements, compounds, or mixtures. The title at the top of this paper should read "Mixtures, Compounds and Elements Assessment."
- A- Mint chocolate chip ice cream
- B- rust
- C- Carbon
- D- Carbon dioxide
- E- water (H2O)
- F- Ocean water
- G- hot chocolate
- H- cotton
- I- sodium
- J- iron
- K- iron oxide
