8th grade distance learning 1.31.2019

Review your notes on physical and chemical changes.

Take this quiz and determine if the examples are physical or chemical changes. Write your answers on a sheet of notebook paper.

For each answer, EXPLAIN your reasoning.

FOR EXAMPLE, you might write:

Breaking a glass - physical change, the substance is still the same substance after the change.

If you determine the example is a chemical change, be specific about WHY you think its a chemical change. Below is a list of some pieces of evidence that can help you determine if a chemical change has occurred:

  • a new odor is present
  • precipitate forms
  • there is a color change
  • a new gas is produced

6th grade distance learning 1.31.2019

Read this web page  about the sun, moon and earth system.

Answer the following questions on a sheet of notebook paper:

  1. The globe is divided into time zones, so that any given hour of the day in one time zone occurs at a different time in other time zones. For example, New York City is in one time zone and Los Angeles is in another time zone. When it is 8:00 a.m. in New York City, it is only 5:00 a.m. in Los Angeles. Explain how Earth’s motions cause this difference in times.
  2. Explain how Earth’s tilt on its axis accounts for seasons on Earth.
  3. Explain how the positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun vary during a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse.
  4. Draw a picture that shows how the Earth, Moon, and Sun are lined up during the new moon phase.
  5. Why are neap tides less extreme than spring tides?
  6. COMPARE and CONTRAST solar and lunar eclipses. (Use the video at the end of the page).

Please do all of the work on a sheet of notebook paper.
You should write "Lunar Eclipses" as the title of your notebook paper.

1. FIRST, watch this short lesson and explain in 1-2 sentences WHEN a lunar eclipse occurs. In addition to writing about the eclipse, include a diagram that shows where the earth, moon and sun are during a lunar eclipse. Remember to label your diagram.

2. SECOND, Read this article and take the ten question quiz at the end. (The link is at the bottom of the page). Write the answers to the ten-question quiz on your notebook paper.

8th grade distance learning 1.30.2019

You will be taking notes on the topic of Elements, Compounds and Mixtures.

1. FIRST, you should get a blank sheet of notebook paper and label the top of it: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures.

2. Next, copy the tree diagram on this website into your notes. "MATTER" should be at the top of the tree.

3. Read the web page and be sure to define the following terms in your own words in your notes:
Element
Atom
Compound
Mixture
Homogenous mixture
Heterogenous mixture

4. Go back to the diagram you drew at the top of your notes. Using the reading to help you, write 2 examples of each of the words on the diagram next to the boxes. FOR EXAMPLE, next to the box that says "matter," you might write "ice cream, air" next to that box, because those two things are examples of matter.

5. ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF NOTEBOOK PAPER, classify the things on the list below as either: elements, compounds, or mixtures. The title at the top of this paper should read "Mixtures, Compounds and Elements Assessment."
  • A- Mint chocolate chip ice cream
  • B- rust
  • C- Carbon
  • D- Carbon dioxide
  • E- water (H2O)
  • F- Ocean water
  • G- hot chocolate
  • H- cotton
  • I- sodium
  • J- iron
  • K- iron oxide
