7th grade filter research

TODAY, you will be given an opportunity to re-design your filters. The constraints have been altered to make your filtering process easier. They are:
-your filter must stand on its own (but also be easily removed from the beaker)
-your filter must remove the sugar, food coloring and rice
-your budget the second time around is $18 AND you have additional supplies to choose from. Click here for the new supply list.

BE CREATIVE. Your filter does NOT have to look like what you think of when you hear the word "filter." It can be BIG or SMALL, it can have multiple parts, it can be any shape you want as long as they fit within the constraints.

On top of that, we learned this week how IMPORTANT the research step of the design process is.

TODAY, you will need to complete 2 tasks on a sheet of notebook paper. The directions are below.

*NOTE: if you received a mark yesterday, you will need to skip to STEP #3 first. After you complete step #3, return to step #1. If you did not receive a mark, you need to complete ONLY steps #1 and steps #2.

1. Use the resources listed below to complete some research on KIDNEYS and FILTERS. One a sheet of notebook paper, write:
FILTER RESEARCH
<your name>
Below that, write AS MANY FACTS as you can that will help you build a more effective filter!
DIY water filters
How do filters work?
How do BRITA filters work? (video)
*I wouldn't have put these resources up if they weren't helpful, please use them!!!!!!*

2. On the back of your notebook paper, make a detailed sketch of your group's NEW prototype. Your sketch should be NEAT, DETAILED and INFORMATIVE. If Ms. Hubbard has a question about your idea: (how is it staying upright? how is it going to work in practice? what materials are you using), you will lose a point for every question (for a total of 10 pts). You should talk to your group during this step. If someone in your group is working on step #3, you don't have to wait for them.

3. ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF NOTEBOOK PAPER, write:
Lab Safety Review
<your name>
at the top of your paper.

Click here to go to a packet of pictures that depict students behaving poorly in a lab.
Observe Panels #1-#6 and answer the questions below the picture IN COMPLETE SENTENCES.
Your paper should look like this:
Panel #1
1. Two unsafe activities depicted in this drawing are....
2. The piece of safety equipment that could be used to put out the fire is...

When you are finished with this activity, calmly and carefully put your notebook paper in the tray. You may NOW start on step #1.
