Homework week of Sep. 30 DUE FRIDAY OCTOBER 11th

SCIENCE STUDENTS: Click on the link to be taken to the podcast for homework. In the blog post below, you are given questions to answer related to the podcast your class has been assigned.
Please write the answers to your homework on a separate sheet of notebook paper.

**You will need audio in order to complete the homework! Please stay in for indoor recess and use a chromebook to complete your homework if you do not have audio access at home!**

6th grade podcast: "America's National Park Podcast: The Sleeping Volcano"
DIRECTIONS: Click on the link above to listen to podcast about Yellowstone National Park. You only need to listen to the first  8 minutes of this podcast in order to answer the questions below. 
On a separate sheet of paper, answer the questions below. If the question asks you to EXPLAIN, you should write in complete sentences!
1. In geology, what is a fissure?
2. EXPLAIN what causes all of the geothermal activity at Yellowstone National Park. 
3. DESCRIBE where Yellowstone National Park is located. (HINT: what state is it, what part of the state is it in?)
4. In this podcast, the narrator talks about conspiracy theories. EXPLAIN what a conspiracy theory is. DESCRIBE the conspiracy theory in this podcast. 
5. Imagine your friend is VERY afraid of a massive volcanic eruption at Yellowstone National Park destroying everything! Give one scientific reason you learned about from this podcast that might help convince you friend to worry less about that.  

7th grade podcast: "Animal Instinct - Bats"
DIRECTIONS: Click on the link above to listen to podcast about bats. You only need to listen to the first 7 minutes of this podcast in order to answer the questions below. 
On a separate sheet of paper, answer the questions below. If the question asks you to EXPLAIN, you should write in complete sentences!
1. What are the most common bats in the United States?
2. EXPLAIN what white nose syndrome is.
3. About how many insects do bats eat every night? 
4. EXPLAIN how bats help farmers (and therefor us, since we eat food that comes from farms!)
5. Give 2 reasons people tend to be afraid of bats. 
6. Give 1 interesting fact you learned about bats from listening to this podcast.

8th grade podcast: "Radiolab: Weights and Measures"
DIRECTIONS: Click on the link above to listen to podcast about units of measurement. You only need to listen to the first 9 minutes of this podcast in order to answer the questions below. 
On a separate sheet of paper, answer the questions below. If the question asks you to EXPLAIN, you should write in complete sentences!
1. What does "SI" stand for?
2. EXPLAIN what the reference is for a meter. (You might have to rewind the podcast a few times...it's a complicated answer!) 
3. EXPLAIN how the reference for a kilogram is different from the reference for a meter and for a second.
4. EXPLAIN how why it was difficult for people to trade with each other before the mid-1700s in France. 
5. EXPLAIN how famine in France in the 1700s led to creation of the kilogram.

Extra 8th grade homework, due October 11th

8th grade student: if you received below a 90% on quiz T1-5, you are required to complete an extra worksheet with problems for homework! Read the worksheet carefully and follow all directions. You will be scored as follows:

91-100% correct on THIS worksheet = 90% on quiz T1-5 in my grade book
81-90% correct on THIS worksheet = 80% on quiz T1-5 in my grade book
71-80% correct on THIS worksheet = 70% on quiz T1-5 in my grade book

If you score below a 70% on this worksheet, you will keep your grade.

Please write your assignment on a piece of notebook paper and include your name and the words 'DISTANCE LEARNING 1" at the top of your paper. 

6th grade:
Read 108-116 in your science book, define all vocabulary, answer all questions on p. 116.

7th grade:
Read p.393-398 in your science book, answer the key concept check on pages: 393, 394,398; define all vocabulary words, answer all the questions on p. 399.

8th grade:
Read p.26-33 in your science book, write all vocabulary words out, answer the key concept checks on pages: 28,32; answer the review questions on p. 33 (1-8) and show work.
